COCO-MAT EXPO by Rowanne Settels: ‘local narratives’ (Rotterdam) spatial drawings & watercolour paintings
This week we proudly present the new COCO-MAT EXPO by Rowanne Settels: ‘Unexpected Obvious Spaces’ at our COCO-MAT Rotterdam store.
Rowanne Settels is known for her spatial drawings and watercolour paintings. “In my work, I focus on the act of looking consciously. This way I keep challenging myself the way I’m observing. ‘
In her drawings and watercolour works, Rowanne approaches special places that she remembers or has awoken her attention. By consciously looking and observing, she absorbs the details. After that, she maps the entire space by a drawing or watercolour painting capturing as many details as possible.
With her work, she emphasizes the ‘unexpectedness’ of daily, almost regular seemed places such as her living room or garden. By consciously observing these spaces, she keeps on discovering new details.
Rowanne also uses this method for her other work, such as her “lighthouse” and “look at the harbor” paintings. For example, her work “look at the harbor” started with her search between the harbour and the shipyards port without having an exact location or name of the boat. By consciously observing her exploration towards the boat, Rowanne was able to draw and paint the space and atmosphere of the port. In this drawing, you can see the view of the Rotterdam Bierhaven and the Harbor Museum from the Jufferkade.
Rowanne Settels studied Visual Arts at the art academy st Joost in Breda and graduated in 2016. Her exhibition at the COCO-MAT store in Rotterdam will start with her work “urban jungle” and “beach drawing”.
